Once upon a time
In a land not so far away
Lived a princess who had everything
Not once did she have to beg or pray
She had dresses and jewellery
And even toy soldiers with which to play
But true friends she had not
Because in that kingdom, acceptance
Was the one thing she never got

While a crown she did wear
Her appearance was odd
Actually quite extreme and rare
And her nature so peculiar;
Because although she was born a boy
She had as quickly noticed
That she was truly a girl
And girls and boys, she would love and treasure
Both equally forever, beyond any measure

Also, and this is quite a shock
Her skin was black as midnight
And under the frills of her skirt
Hid a clubfoot, out of sight
She was anything but average
And in fact quite happy with herself
But the world was cold and cruel
And demanded that her highness
Get rid of all her uniqueness.

And as was custom then and there
Politics swelled to interfere
A team of the countries’ brightest minds
Would examine our princess dear
She was tested for allergies
Monitored in therapies
Scrutinized for her abnormalities
But one thing was crystal clear
Change she must, my dear

The princess, feeling utterly lost
Asked her fairy godmother for help
To finally put an end
To this criticism, at all cost
‘I can give you what you ask
Skin colour, gender, it’s all a small task
But my dear, I must ask, do you really want to live
As just another person lost in the crowd,
With nothing special to give?’

‘Your book is so much more
Than can be judged by your cover
Your heart reflects your true nature
That we’re all lucky to discover’
The princess’ heart began to glow
The smile upon her face started to grow
It was not she who must accept
The way that she was, but all others
For never her true self would she try to smother

And, that very same day she stood and decreed
That a ball would be held to celebrate
Those who won’t be defined by others
For love is limitless, has no mandate
It is an ode to diversity
That leads always to unity
And from her tower, the proud princess could see
That on that glorious day
The Belgian Pride had come to be
