On Thursday, May 19, 2022 at 7pm, Archi Urbain (BX1) and the Palace Cinema propose an evening of debate on gender and urban space as part of Pride week.
The urban space has been too little thought for the various users without distinction of gender and also without distinction between ages or social background.
Today, it is clear that urban space is being thought of in a different way in order to offer the inhabitants of cities and the countryside more inclusive places to live.
This is done through reflections, research, attempts and practices that are currently underway in Barcelona, Vienna, Geneva, Paris and Brussels.
During 2 hours, Mister Emma will give the floor to various experts who will talk about their research and practices. We invite the public to take part in the debate in order to compare ideas and improve the solutions currently in place.
As a prelude to the debate, the Palace Cinema will screen the short film Annie et les Nanas. This short film of 26 minutes tells the story of the renaming of the Leopold II tunnel to Annie Cordy and talks about the artistic work of Charlotte Beaudry who imagined a work to animate the 5 km of tunnel, a work that honors the women of Brussels of today and tomorrow. The women take their place in the tunnel, they are there and they are there.
This film is a film about women. Mister Emma gives the floor to the Minister of Mobility of the Brussels-Capital Region, Elke Van den Brandt, who is in charge of this project. She decided to rename the tunnel and asked the architectural firm ArtBuild to find an artist. Leslie Midy is in charge of this project within the agency, and has joined forces with the curator Alice Van Den Abeele for the artistic part. Finally, the lighting of the tunnel and the work of Charlotte Beaudry was entrusted to Radiance 35, directed by the lighting planner Isabelle Corten. Finally, the production of the reportage is enhanced by the talent of the editor Cristina Dias and the music of Lou Wéry.
The debate will take place in two parts: at the end of the projection, we will have the pleasure to welcome all the protagonists of the film who will come to speak about the project. Then, we will get to the heart of the matter with Bouwmeester Kristiaan Borret who will talk about the way the BMa deals with these questions of gender and public space within its administration. We will hear from Frédéric Saliez who works at UN-Habitat, the UN program that deals with urban policy and promotes inclusive urban development, mainly in the South, in humanitarian crisis contexts and in conflict zones. We will give the floor to practitioners such as urban planners Christophe Mercier (Suède 36) and Petra Pferdmenges (Alive Architecture) who will talk about the practical implementation in the field. Mobility will be approached through the prism of Molenbike and its Hirond'elles initiative with the participation of Riet Naessens.
